Clinton bloggers get talking points - ethical?

Fri May 16, 2008 at 07:51:59 PM PDT

Remember Alegre? She used to post a lot here and then went on a well-publicized strike.

Well, according to a diary now on mydd written by someone other than me, she goes on conference calls for Hillary bloggers where they get their talking points.

Not much of a diary but as I was cruising the blogs I came across a Clinton "blogger" conference call.  I started listening to the call and who do I hear but our local celebrity Alegre.   She said she was going to take her two children to the May 31 DNC meeting to share her views.  Now here is the kicker, she sounded like a normal, even nice person.   It was obvious she has a lot of emotional energy invested in this process but it was a very sincere caring passion.  I often think she goes over the top in her post but after getting a chance to hear her actually talking to Sen. Clinton I have a different, better view of her.  Still over the top but a a sincere over the top.

Meat of the conversation, Talking Points.

  1. Popular Vote
  2. Electoral College Vote
  3. FL/MI Votes
  4. Party Unity in the end
  5. Email Address for video, talking points and anything else they need. (Chelsea is a popular subject of video's bloggers want more)
  6. Ooops lost the Senator off the call near the end.

When I would respond to Alegre, I always wondered why she could never really answer in a substantive way.  Well, I've found out now. These were not her ideas, so they weren't anything she thought through herself.  And so she couldn't respond in a meaningful and rational way.

Am I the only person to think there are ethical problems here?  Rather than this blogger being someone like the rest of us, an individual who is acting independently when she blogs, Alegre is a campaign operative passing herself off as someone who is just another typical blogger.

And the Clinton campaign is running a public relations campaign that relies on trying to get people to think that these are spontaneous, real thoughts of their supporters -- when they are scripted by their communications team.
