Top Comments: A Trip Down Memory Lane Edition

Wed Aug 22, 2007 at 07:42:25 PM PDT

We have so many insightful and powerful diaries written here at Daily Kos.  Our diaries inform, inflame, impassion, and even entertain.  We Kossacks have strong voices and an even stronger will to be the change we wish to see in this country.

One of the richest, and perhaps most under-appreciated, areas of thought come in the form of comments attached to these diaries.

Here at Top Comments we strive to recognize and promote the talent of this community by highlighting outstanding comments found throughout the day by the diarist, and through nominations at made at topcomments at gmail dot com by your fellow Kossacks.

These nominations are subjective, and certainly not complete (as no one can read the complete site on a daily basis!). But hopefully they will serve to shine a light where deserved, and to give the reader a good starting point in finding conversation on the site.

Please come in and make yourself at home!   Join us beneath the fold...

OK. I've got nothin' tonight. I'm still here at work trying to finish a project, and all I've got is a nostalgic trip down memory lane. So without further bullshit from me, here's an examination of days gone by in Top Comments history.

I. One Year Ago In Top Comments

So, you wanna know what we were talking about one year ago today in Top Comments? Well, let's find out:

Prolific Top Comments diarist va dare wrote the diary for August 22, 2006. It was titled, "Top Comments - Aug. 22 - Another HoTuesday."  va dare noted that she was going to stick mostly with highlighting the submitted Top Comments, but that she couldn't "resist dumping some more caca on my state's favored racist, George Allen."  Heh. As such, she post this:

va dare posted a fairly large number of Top Comments. Be sure to give them a look, but here is one of my favorite, wherein phriendlyjaime started an amusing string of George Allen-related comments.

The comments had some good exchanges with some familiar faces. Here is CSI Bentonville starting an amusing thread about cats. Here is one that made me stop and reflect, simply because it is from our sorely missed friend station wagon. [An aside, for those who couldn't make it, Markos gave a wonderful tribute to those kossacks who were no longer with us, including station wagon.]

I was also much amused by this exchanged between clonecone and begone. And for some reason, I can't resist highlighting this exchange involving (of all people) noweasels, Elise, Armando, and Miss Devore. Way. Too. Funny.

Please be sure and read them all folks!

A reminder. Please keep sending in those top comment nominations to:

II. Tonight's Top Comments

Via kath25:

This comment by Eternal Hope should be part of the FAQ, or at least a must-read before any and all blanket Dem-bashing diaries.

Via Light Emitting Pickle:

7November corrects Jerome a Paris' spelling of
ferner.

Via Major Danby:

SteamPunkX has a great line on the Freepers' mixed response to Crazy Mr. Atkinson's Family Security-approved rantings here

Via carolita:

dhonig tells how dinosaurs really became extinct in shockwave's excellent  The Rapture is not an exit strategy.

From xxdr zombiexx's Democratic Capitulators now 'regret' the FISA Cave-In:

vigilant meerkat is fed up with the Fainting-Goat Democrats and going to take action. Charge!

cskendrick has a little talk with himself and concludes that the FISA vote proves that many Dems have the same goal as repubs -- the permanent aggrandizement of the Presidency -- because they have all lost faith in representative democracy.

Via ?:

Bob Johnson discusses Carl Levin's grasp on national sovereignty with respect to his comments on Maliki

Via GOTV:

Here's the set-up. And here's the punchline

Via daktech:

BalanceSeeker may have explained why I can’t moderate my outrage anymore.  I think my meter has the same problem as his. From this great diary by R o o k.

Via RiaD:

StrangeAnimals had a superb comment in his tip jar

I don’t know why this comment by jessical touched me so, but I cried reading it.

All the comments were great in my first diary that had over 50 comments. This was particularly fine:

Gizmo59 notes that "it's hopeless to try to bring new and different points of view to a closed mind."

Be sure to see Boisiepoet's reply.

Here is, from my diary, the best ever comment ;-)

But I might be a bit biased.

Via sardonyx:

Eddie Haskell gives a pithy delineation of What the current president knows about Viet Nam in mcjoan's front-page diary Embracing Vietnam.

In StrangeAnimal's diary The Land Of No Middle Ground, the thread started by AndyS In Colorado and continued between him and jessical (and later RiaD) was well worth reading.

MichiganGirl's post-midnight rant is truly masterful. She turned it into a diary this afternoon that didn't get nearly enough attention: George Bush thinks he's qualified to give vocabulary lessons?
