Obama Superdelegate Round-Up

Thu May 15, 2008 at 07:50:04 PM PDT

The superdelegates continue to trickle in and Obama continues to widen his lead.  This morning US Congressman Jim McDermott (superdelegate) announced his support for Obama:

Congressman McDermott said, “I am proud to endorse Barack Obama today, because I believe he will bring us together to achieve the kind of change we need in this country moving forward.  As Democrats, we are fortunate to have two very talented public servants running to be the nominee of our party, and I have great respect for Senator Clinton. But I believe now is the time to unite behind Barack Obama so we can be in the strongest place possible to win in November.  Barack Obama has chosen to spend his career speaking out for those who need a voice and reaching across the aisle to bring change that matters in the lives of working families. I am confident that as president, Barack Obama will end the war in Iraq and bring our sons and daughters home, he will make universal health care a reality and he will restore our moral standing in the world.  Barack Obama won the race in my home state by an overwhelming margin and I am thankful that so many new voters have become engaged because of the kind of campaign he has run, and I am happy to support him today.”

He was followed by Congressman Henry Waxman and Congressman Howard Berman.  Both are California superdelegates:

"Senator Obama's vision for change has inspired tens of millions of Americans," Chairman Waxman said.  "And he's also proved that he has the experience, judgment, integrity, and toughness to bring real reform to Washington. Our nation faces big challenges.  We need to bring our troops safely home from Iraq.  We need to solve global warming and finally enact universal health care legislation.  And we need to create new jobs and strengthen our middle class. Senator Obama is the leader we need both here and around the world. He will be an extraordinary President, and I look forward to working with him to make his vision for change the new reality in Washington."

"Barack Obama has laid out a foreign policy vision driven by principle and conviction, and he understands that our moral authority and our safety as a nation go hand in hand," Chairman Berman said. "I spoke with him about a number of foreign policy issues that most concern me.  He assured me that he shares my views. The moment President Obama takes office, we'll send a powerful message to the world that America is back and ready to lead again—that we haven't abandoned the values that made us the light of the world, and neither should anyone else."

Communications Workers of America President, DNC member, and superdelegate Larry Cohen got on board:

I’m convinced that Senator Obama’s message of hope and ‘change we can believe in’ has resonated across our country. He is building a broad base of support, inspiring new voters to join in the political process and demonstrating great appeal to all those who are looking for positive leadership to move us beyond politics-as-usual in Washington.

The Democratic unity theme continued as the United Steelworkers Union weighed in with an Obama endorsement this morning, having previously backed John Edwards.

As a result of the Edwards endorsement, Obama began picking up former Edwards delegates, including the eight listed below.  Hat tip to ourhispanicvoices for the list:

EDWARDS DELEGATES FOR OBAMA
CNN finally listed names

  1. Joshua Denton (NH)
  1. Mike Evatt (SC)
  1. Lauren Bilton (SC)
  1. Daniel Boan Kershaw(SC)
  1. Machelle Crum (IA)
  1. Christine Brennan-Bond (SC)
  1. Robert Groce (SC)
  1. Susan Smith (SC)

note:  John Moylan is an alternate delegate for Edwards, if he's needed he has backed Obama.

Obama +1 Addition in NC: NC Officials have said Obama will gain an extra delegate and Clinton will lose one due to numbers becoming official and he over performing in an area.

All told, Obama picked up 13 votes and Clinton loses one vote.  He's in cruise control at this point.

On a final note, for those interested in becoming a community organizer for Obama, today is the last day to apply for the Obama Organizing Fellowship. Applications are due by 11:59 PM EDT.

Political bosses firmly believe in the age old principal of supporting that which is going to happen. And what is going to happen now is Obama. Hillary is a bad bet. Obama is going to do fine in Puerto Rico, if Hillary is even still around in June which if she is at all rational about this -- now a sadly open question -- she will not be.

I have a local web site where the banner shows the delegate count.

I used to try to keep it matched to the count on bo.com, but this is getting ridiculous, albeit in a really good way.

BTW, the picture of Barack and Michelle at the NC celebration is notable for the Kos Orange dress Michelle was wearing.

    some time now.

He gains supers every day.  Once he was 100 behind, now he has a clear lead.

Clinton's people must be going ape as the supers are their last shot and it's going so right for Obama and so wrong for them.

We used to worry the supers would throw this the wrong way, but I always thought, being politicians, they would come around.

    •  I suppose (5+ / 0-)

but why would they?  Everybody (except the Clinton inner circle apparently) knew that WVa didn't change things one bit.

Hell, that's one of the reasons I'm irritated with Clinton.  There are folks in WVa who need our help, good Democrats fighting the good fight, whether or not they like Obama.  Clinton - not Obama - managed to marginalize WVa by turning it into a caricature.

PS. yes, there are some folks who believe stupid things in WVa, but this country has folks like that all over the place.  But Clinton, who could have done a lot to bring WVa to the forefront by emphasizing the pain that WVaians share with working class folks all over the country, chose instead to go divisive.

I'm glad this ridiculous season is in its final innings.

I remember Hillary losing one night during Obama's big string of wins in February, and during her speech I could sense that she really knew it was over.

A week later, the campaign is back again on high octane, doing all the damage it did before Texas. I kept wondering to myself, who the hell got to her? Who put her back in the box?

Again, all a fantasy, but I'm convinced it had to be Bill.

I'm sure we'll hear all about it in the memoirs; and you can damn well bet that Big Dog is going to look even worse for his part in this campaign through the lens of history, I think.

That trio of incompetent, red-baiting, race-baiting liars should never be allowed to receive money from a Democratic campaign again.

I'd consider accepting Hillary on the ticket on the the condition that they be sent forever back to the world of corporate PR - and, for good measure, that Lanny Davis never be allowed on TV again.

experts refuse to acknowledge is that HRC is not beloved outside of a certain segment of the Democratic insider party.  If she were so loved, she would have gotten more Senate endorsements.  The fact of the matter is, all of the Insiders know, HRC (and more importantly Bill) hasn't been "vetted" since leaving the W.H.. Dems can't take a chance on losing because someone was unable to keep his zipper up, and everyone knows it.

  •  Wow. So much for Hillary's WV victory. (0+ / 0-)

She picked up 12 delegates in the Mountain State.

Obama picked up 13 today, as people (SDs in particular) are beginning to realize that he's won it.

The Edwards endorsement on prime time TV the day after WV seems ingenious in retrospect.  It killed any possible momentum she might have picked up.  She has no more good press days remaining.  Though she'll win Kentucky, Obama will win Oregon on the same day.  At this point, a tie is a major victory for Obama.

Even if Hillary wins Puerto Rico, they have no electoral votes in fall.  It will be amusing to see how the spinsters try to turn it into a "must win state in the fall."  The denial of reality thus far has been epic.

Lastly, Obama should win both primaries on June 3, sweeping the final day of voting.

to ask her to endorse Obama.

2 weeks ago I sent email.  No reply.

Last week I called to ask why she hasn't endorsed one of the candidates.  The staffer said they would have to get in touch with me.

Today the staffer said that my rep hasn't decided and deserves a chance to weigh in with her vote like everyone else, then implied that the vote was personal.

WTF?  The only acceptable reason for not coming forward with her superdelegate support at this point in time is that she might be one of the superdelegates Obama is trickling out bit by bit.  But somehow, I don't think so.

So far, very unimpressed with this new rep.
