They can't run a country, or a war, or balance a budget. They have been wrong, continually, for more than eight years, so why should I worry that they think Barack's pastor is the "key to victory".
The muslim thing didn't work and they have thrown that Swiftboat away (awww, poor dead wittle talking point), and now they are attacking a preacher man because they have nothing on Barack.
Meanwhile, they have completely forgotten about Hillary, and McCain is out there in the Middle East making an ass of himself.
They really can't win.

they want the primary to turn bloody.
As a Californian, I can tell you, our last primary for the Governor's race was absolutely miserable. Two guys, either of whom I would have happily voted for over the Governator, beating each other bloody to the point that by the time the general came around, not only were they out of ammo and money, but the whole damned State was sick of looking at them. So Arnie got re-elected.
This is what they want our Presidential primary to turn into. I don't think Obama will bite, though Hil seems game, on the (mistaken)theory that getting in some early shiv practice will be helpful in the general.
I so don't want to see this happen. I frankly think it's gone too deep into the cycle without going there to really do the same thing, but I still don't think it would help matters any.
So, while I'm not entirely sure that the Reich Wing actually wants to run against Hil, they sure as hell don't want the primary battle to end.

as someone who lived through the sixties, is that somewhere there is a racist wingnut deadender so twisted that he will try to assassinate Obama.
JFK, RFK, MLK, even George Wallace and Ronald Reagan, all suffered assassination attempts, some sucessful. Somebody as charismatic as Obama, who represents to wingnuts the end of white dominance in America, is a natural target.
Lets hope the Secret Service is up to the task.

I mean, they tried for Truman, skipped Ike, got JFK, skipped LBJ, skipped Nixon (why?), tried for Ford, skipped Carter, got Reagan, skipped GHW Bush, skipped Clinton, skipped the moron Shrub (maybe afraid Cheney would take over).
It's all random.
Nutcases all have an axe to grind, and they are all wierdos.
by angrytoyrobot on Thu Mar 20, 2008 at 08:35:43 AM PDT
I think there is just more an emotional charge wrapped up in some people. Ike was a competent President but he didn't get anybody excited. Obama gets lots of people excited, both in a positive and negative sense.
by MadScientist on Thu Mar 20, 2008 at 08:46:26 AM PDT
(Unless, as was likely the case with JFK, there's a conspiracy.)
I would bet every single president has had multiple people attempt to assassinate him.
Reagan actually got shot because Hinckley apparently had a plan clever enough to beat the Secret Service, at least that day.
But I'd easily bet that the Secret Service foiled several plans against each of LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan (besides the one that almost succeeded), GHWB, Clinton, and Dubya, as well as those who came before.
I'd bet that the Secret Service has probably arrested at least one person who has already tried to assassinate Obama, at least one at Hillary, at least one at McCain, at least one at Romney, etc..
Obama, being black, will probably draw a few more attempts than he would if he weren't. But I don't think any president or serious candidate doesn't come reasonably close to being assassinated at some point.
Fortunately, the Secret Service does a good job the vast majority of the time.

I'm still convinced that Quayle was life insurance. Even a complete nutter could see what a bad idea putting him in the Oval Office would be. Cheney has used Little Bush in sort of the opposite way, more like Poppy used Reagan, but with a twist.

that told the Dallas cops to stop the security checks going into Obama's speech during the Texas Primary? That Secret Service? I'm loathe to put any faith at all in any organization run by the Executive Branch at this point. Everything, and I mean everything, has been turned into mere political machinery to buoy their power. It's disgusting.
The Secret Service had been my last hope of an agency that would manage to not be corrupted by the disease that is the Bush Administration. It has always been above politics, knowing that its job was the same no matter who sat in the chair. After that order in Dallas, I'm done.

Here are two quotes in the article on how the GOP will attack Obama if he is the nominiee:
"The emerging strategy -- at least according to leading Republican operatives who spoke on the record -- doesn't depend on reminding Americans of Obama's middle name, or on clumsy rhetoric from Clinton supporters such as Geraldine Ferraro who have helped to make race a divisive issue. Republicans say they'll try, first and foremost, to paint Obama as dangerously inexperienced -- a characterization of him that Clinton's own polling has found to resonate with many voters, and an attack that Clinton has already been using. Republicans say they'll also portray Obama as unacceptably liberal, using his record as a state and U.S. senator."
"He does very well in an auditorium with 15,000 screaming liberal sycophants," Wadhams declared, "but whenever he's interviewed on a tough subject or following a defeat by Senator Clinton in some primary or caucus, I don't think he does very well."

If Obama and us fight back, the GOP has nothing. Let their stupid 527s run their 30 second attack ads against Obama and the Rev. Wright. I say, "bring 'em on". We have a mountain of ammunition to throw right back at them for the reasons you stated that will dwarf whatever attack ads the GOP and their surrogates run against Obama on this non-issue.

and that's why we're in this mess
it will be the continuous drum beat on obama with their invisible bat of talk radio that they and only they can swing- day after day after day until it all surfaces with the lazy celebrity talking heads later in the day or week or year and once again a 10% minority will use its giant soapbox to distort this 'democracy' and it's 'free press' until the election is close enough to steal.

by angrytoyrobot on Thu Mar 20, 2008 at 10:57:41 AM PDT
the local talk radio stations are the centers of GOP power. we wouldn't be in this mess without that uncontested repetition to sell their lies and distortions across the country. that's were the propaganda groundwork is done, the swiftboating, and the excuses for anything republican. .
most local sponsors of these loudmouths are just going with the biggest markets and haven't felt any felt much need to look for alternatives yet.

We were never going to get the diehard Bush 19%ers in any case. If there are ways to discourage them from showing up at the polls, that would be a good thing.
The GOP has spent a number of years painting McCain as a "liberal"... e.g. Bush's 2000 primary campaign. A little research should turn them up. Calling in some of the alleged basis of these accusations might remind those people not to show up at the polls.
Phone lines are open. . .
Other than that, I'd say ignore them. Until their networks come up for renewal of their broadcast licenses in 2009.
I'd say it's time for media deconsolidation and reinstitution of the Fairness Doctrine. Other than that, the US might want to help finance the EU project which will attempt to integrate Internet with the TV set. . . set-top boxes and delivery via P2P. This might also give us another benefit... 10,000,000 channels and nothing to watch. :-)
by alizard on Thu Mar 20, 2008 at 10:09:57 PM PDT
the biggest problem with talk radio isn't the 20% limbaugh/bush base, it's the trickle up effect on the rest of the media and it is effective because it is uncontested and coordinated.
it provides a giant bandwagon on talking points and oneliners for the lazy celebrity media to pick from- already tested and prechewed so they know they won't be sticking their necks out and millions in their audience have already heard them. and when the dan rathers stick their necks out the hoards that limbaugh and hannity can activate are very effective.
talk radio more than any other medium decides what is politically correct or incorrect. it kills controversial (republican critical) stories and sustains for weeks irrelevant garbage like an edwards haircut.
talk radio because it does the groundwork repetition for the GOP is also a good place to find out what they're up to. many of the minor issues they want to turm major can get beaten on talk radio for months first before barging on to TV , like the immigration issue.
deconsolidation will be great but to ignore talk radio while it tears into the dem candidate uncontested would be a mistake- obama defenders might do well to boycott the sponsors of the local talk radio stations that lie and threaten him and maybe wave signs at the station itself.
