Fewer lofty speeches connecting with the 10% of Americans who like to think critically, and more sports talk radio. Great way to reach the white male voters he needs desperately. He should really put this effort into overdrive.

sports connections make him more appealing----reports of stopping into gyms to play bball with some of the locals, working on his NCAA brackets on the plane, telling the Pitt reporter that "Steelers" was the first thing that comes to mind when he hears the word Pittsburgh and being able to name every single player from when he was a fan as a kid, having Jay Paterno in the Penn St. Students for Obama group, confessing his free time pleasure in watching and listening to sports talk etc. etc.

are big time GOPers - so that's a pleasant surprise. My fear is that if HRC is the candidate these types of crossover voters will drift away to McCain and HRC will underperform Kerry. Kerry barely carried PA, and probably didnt do too well with the Philly sports radio nuts after asking for Swiss cheese on his Philly Steak !!

Provolone, yes. American, yes. Even Cheez Wiz.
Not Swiss!
I like Provolone, sauce, and onions. (the sauce is Pizza sauce and sometimes the sandwich is referred to as a Pizza steak, depending on what part of Philly you are in).

Vento won the right to post a "This is America. When ordering please speak English." sticker at his restaurant...of course, the sticker has a big eagle and American flag on it, making it less about English and more about anti-immigration.

I would love to see Obama go to Penn State. He has a huge amount of support there among students and faculty. And they love sports and half the students are from Philadelphia.
But Joe is a darn Republican ( love him and respect him as a coaching legend and I have met him several times ) but he endorsed Nixon, Reagan, both Bushes and his son ran for US Congress and lost to a Democrat..Heheehee..

by ManhattanMan on Thu Mar 20, 2008 at 10:18:59 AM PDT
I like to think of myself as part of both groups. But there are plenty of white male sports fans in Pennsylvania who aren't part of the sabermetric, Theo Epstein/Bill Belichick academic analyst sports crowd.
by MikeMinCT on Thu Mar 20, 2008 at 10:24:54 AM PDT
Just said that people who think critically are a small percentage of the population, and sports talk casts a wider net. In other words, some sports fans don't like to think critically, and talk radio reaches them better than masterful oratory.

Boomer Esiason was killing Obama this morning about the Wright thing. He was so misinformed I was pounding the steering wheel. Too bad calling WFAN is nearly impossible, or I would have called up and set him right.
Esiason is a huge wingnut anyway, but I was pretty surprised that he just went after him in the context--they had Jay Jay French from Twisted Sister on, talking about a song they were putting together in support of Obama...and Boomer was like "What about the racist things he said???"

like most sports radio hosts, lean pretty far to the right.
WIP features more left-leaning hosts than perhaps any other major sportstalk station in the country. Angelo Cataldi, who did the Obama interview this morning, is clearly conservative, but most of the other guys on the station are a smidge left from the middle politically. Except for G. Cobb (one of only 2 African-American hosts on WIP), who probably still thinks it's unpatriotic to disagree with Bush.

Here in TX, I can't even imagine a local sports show that would take time out from bashing and hooting at Democrats (any Democrat at all, for any reason; and actually, they use the word "librul" - I guess "Democrat" has too many syllables) to actually put one on the air and let him/her speak. Local talk radio here is universally conservative, and universally crappy.
