Love what you're all doing there, even though I'm usually on the bus home when you're on the air! :) Thankful I can still stream it after the fact though!
You mentioned having me call into the show at some point. If you're still up for it, I've actually got something on my mind to share.
The whole Stoller/Mizner tussle over Edwards today got me on my usual trip of picking apart the arguements of all sides and where both went wrong in their approaches to those arguements.
Taking that train of thought into a wider sphere, one of my favorite things to do when it comes to politics, is direct, face to face engagment with our opponents; i.e. Republicans, conservatives, and so on. I've actually had pretty good luck with it surprisingly.
So if you're at all thinking about doing anything along these lines. I'm your man.
Ya'll might think I'm sick in the head, but I actually enjoy sitting down and having a face to face discussion with the other side of the fence. But one thing I should stress, it's a face to face engagement, not comments, not email.
When you have to look another person in the eye, most are less likely to get vicious and mean about it. Not always, but mostly, and those that do, I simply walk away from entirely.
No, I haven't been swung at yet. hehe But that might have more to do with the bald head, goatee, and leather I'm usually sporting, than anything else. I DID grow up on 8 mile a good part of my life after all. ;)
by Erevann on Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 06:39:58 PM PDT
I haven't been around the past 2 days and don't know what happened with the whole thing today, but it would be great if you could call into one of the shows. I will add your email to the email list (if I haven't already) and this way you can see the topics (when I post them tomorrow, or in future weeks)....
by clammyc on Tue Aug 14, 2007 at 07:02:13 PM PDT
I'll have to be sure to arrange some time out of work to do it, but it'll be worth it!
Now, if only my dev's cooperate. hehe

seems like Edwards is the only thing that could get everyone in such a tizzle like this.
oops. I hope the gate wasn't too expensive.

from how I understand it is this...
Stoller posited that the framing of Edwards discussions of poverty and it's relation to race, could in some way been seen as a bit racist, or at least misguided in how he and Elizabeth discuss it.
A particular quote that was thrown around was Elizabeth stating: we can't make John black, nor can we make him a woman. (this last point I could make an arguement that it's not entirely impossible, but that's neither here nor there hehe)
Mizner took exception to the "a little racist" statement and his commentary concerning poverty and the middle class.
Unfortunately, in the process of making a very worthy argument in refutation of Stoller's points, he slipped into some pretty harsh, personal, character assasination, and that's about where I left off...
Stoller had a response up on the rec list for a while that I haven't gotten into yet, but I can imagine a few counter-points and possibly a few recriminations in it. But that's just my speculation at this point.
Outside of the "little racist" characterization from Stoller, which I think was pretty much just an ineffective communication of the difficulty for a white male (or female, for that matter) to discuss issues of poverty and race, without somehow being penned in as bigoted, even if completely unintentionally.
Mizner touched on that idea briefly, but seems to have gotten lost in his own anger and outrage. Then while making quite a few very good points, just got into attacking Stoller personally, which in my opinion, completely distracted from the very good counter-argument he was making otherwise.
So there's the cliff-notes on it from what I read so far. :) Hope it helps!
