I know it is the Transgender Day of Remembrance. (There is a commemoration this evening at City Hall here in Austin which I plan to attend.) But it also made me think of mentally retarded people I have known, and the hurt in their eyes when they realized they were being rejected and excluded by normal people.

...as was the period in which this was written, which was about two months before my reassignment surgery. I don't recall precisely what sparked it, but I believe it might have been learning that the school would not give me medical leave to recover from it, meaning I would miss a month of classes, without pay, and have to return to teach three weeks before my doctor said I should.
